Bringing a new puppy into your home is truly an exciting time for you and your family. Many owners become preoccupied with the cuteness of the new addition and forget that their tiny pet will grow into a strong adult dog. This is why puppy obedience training is so important for the well being of you and your canine companion.
The first month is crucial as it is the most impressionable stage. Adhere to the following tips and information to ensure that your young pooch does not develop any bad habits. Character development is very important as it determines the future of their interaction with other dogs and people.
Before the new arrival enters the home, make sure that all vaccinations are up to date and that you have the tools necessary to start the training process. Purchase a leash and preferably a harness over a collar so that the collar will not place too much pressure on the sensitive throat, which may result in damage. Treats and toys should be used as rewards for desired behavior.
It is very important that the first step involves establishing a routine. This is where all members of the family will consistently follow the times when the pooch will be fed and played with among other activities. Rules are important as this will teach the puppy their place in the pack.
Start Potty Training immediately. Begin with designating an area to be used as the toilet. Every 5 to 10 minutes after your puppy has had a meal, move it to the space you have provided for them to relieve themselves. With each successful attempt, reward the young canine with a doggy snack and praise with affection.
Teach the newcomer to respond to its name by sitting down, calling him or her with your arms spread open and reward with a favorite treat each time they comes toward you. They tend to learn very quickly through encouragement and positive reinforcement. Ensure exposure to a number of other dogs, cats and people throughout their lifetime as socialization can prevent behavioral problems.
Establish a regular exercise routine for you puppy. It is a great way to bond and discipline your pooch at the same time. Do not physically or harshly reprimand them when you do not approve of a particular behavior. Instead, use a firm no, removal of toys or ignore their bad behavior should be adequate punishment.
One thing to remember is to keep sessions short and stimulating. Once you have lost the attention of your cuddly friend, it may be very difficult to get their attention and cooperation again. Do not react harshly to undesired responses as you may only perpetuate the development of fear and aggression in the adult dog.
Nipping and biting are a natural part of your dog’s development. In the case of excessive mouthing, when it happens, simply close the snout of your furry friend and say a firm NO. Your puppy will soon learn that this is an unacceptable behavior.
Be consistent but ultimately have fun while training your puppy. Remember that they do not stay small forever. Positive reinforcement, boundaries and lots of praise will help you raise the perfect puppy that will part of your family for a long time.
